This past Saturday was the 11th anniversary of Hilo Rojo (my school here.). The neighborhood put on a big celebration, and it was really heartwarming to see how connected this community is. The moms came early to decorate, and I was quite impressed with what they could do with, pretty much, recycled materials. Then, we all worked together to put on a show which included some of the students from the local college teaching the kids traditional Peruvian dances and performing some themselves (super cool!). In addition, each teacher got to pick a “king and queen” from their class which is a huge honor- like being prom king and queen. For many of the families, this is the biggest celebration of their year, so it was really amazing to get to be a part of it. The photos speak for themselves.
